"Musings and Ramblings of A Convoluted Mind"

{February 25, 2010}   Time For A Quickie…

So I really need to get better at this weekly posting thing… because, let’s face it… I don’t have the motivation or time to do a daily blog post… so a weekly summary isn’t that bad, right?  Now if only I could remember to do it!!

My last blog was on the eighth with that wonderfully warm sunny day.  Since then we’ve had snow and then back to 70 degree weather!  Crazy.

Hubby has returned back to school after three weeks of vacation.  He is about four hours away so we will only get to see him on long weekends.  It’s an adjustment to playing “single mother” again.  But kiddo is adjusting alright.  There is always a bit of a struggle the first few days that daddy is gone but we fall into a new pattern pretty quickly.

No new projects started.  Been busy supervising people working on the house.  Fence was put up in the back (only took four days…) and some other things were done to the house as well.  I have a bit of stranger anxiety and I really don’t like having strangers in my house but I survived.  But I’m already dreading the guy coming back to fix the ceiling again.  I can’t believe that I’m almost 30 and I still believe in stranger danger.

Maybe I should buy some pepper spray.

Wow! Today was a super fun, super busy day!  With spring coming around the corner the temperatures are getting better outside!  Today we nearly reached sixty degrees!  HEAT WAVE!  Of course we took Bradley outside and we played for close to four hours.

And being the mom I am and with my project Three Six Five, I had my camera fixed to my hand most of the day.

So happy to be outside playing in the nice warm sun!

And of course we had to get into EVERYTHING…

… even though we have tons of toys.

One thing about the lot our house was built on, it use to be cotton fields and farming area.  This is clearly evidenced by all the turnip we have growing in our yard!!    I’m not sure that I’ll ever feel comfortable enough to eat this, but the horses and cow sure love them!!

We were so busy exploring today!  Bradley discovered what dirt tastes like (and he didn’t enjoy it).  Even the kitty came out to play with us.

“What’s that over there?”

A plane?

A horse?

A big hole?

Bradley loved playing in the sun and in the really long grass!  Most of our lawn won’t grow but we have this one strip of long, lush, dark green grass.  Bradley decided to relax for a little while.

Too darn cute!

{January 25, 2010}   We Inspire Learning Here

I’ve been excited about creating my son’s craft and creativity corner.  I started with just having some letters on the wall.  I’ve been pondering what kind of furniture to get him.  I’ve seen a few table and chair sets that were nice but his corner is a little small and I wanted something that would have more than one function.  So I finally found a table on Amazon and it even came with a roll of paper!

Anyway, the table arrived today.  I knew that I was going to have to put it together myself and I actually enjoy doing it.  Today wasn’t one of those fun days.  The table was completely missing a hole for the rod that holds the paper to go through.  The screw holes didn’t line up.  I had to make holes… The paint was chipped.  Parts came with it that didn’t belong.  Some of the wood was cracked.  But then I realized: this desk is for a two year old.  The paint is going to get chipped.  Things will break… it’s all par for the course!  A day in the life.

So the table and chair set is complete.

I hope too inspire a lifetime love of learning.

Close up of desk.  Paper roll left side.

Let the fun begin!!!

{January 20, 2010}   Make A Wish

19:365 Make A Wish

Originally uploaded by cognitive.distortion

I have to admit, I don’t understand Flickr. I post. I comment… I was all excited about this 365 thing at the start of the year and then when my first picture hit front page… how could I not get psyched for this coming year.

But I knew it was a total fluke. My images have had a crummy reception since “Clean Slate”. Eventually that will be my downfall… not getting the motivation from others makes the project difficult. But I’m going to do this for as long as I can….I got over 100 days last year before life became too much of a struggle and I needed to quit. We’ll see what this year holds and once again I might be facing another move. And it comes at a difficult time.

But that’s a post for another day.

{January 19, 2010}   Tables, Chairs… Crafts…

The past few days have been crazy!!!  I wanted to update over the weekend but I was up to my eyeballs in quilting stuff.  Yes, my mom came up and taught me to quilt.  She’s only been dying to do this for ten years.  And sure enough, I love it.  I already stocked up on some Christmas fabric while it was 60% off so I could premake quilts to mail as presents this coming Christmas.  Yeah, planning ahead.  My mom has a long arm quilter so she’ll be able to add some nice designs for me… not to mention she wants to teach me to do that as well and then she said she’d give me her extra quilter.

Because it wasn’t enough that she simply GAVE me her five thousand dollar sewing machine.  But this baby does it all….

So now I have the start of my crafty corner set up as well as the beginning of Bradley’s craft and learning center.  I’ll have to take some pictures.  I’m desperately trying to find an inexpensive child’s table for him though and maybe a little easel.  Amazon has some fun ones… but I’d like to find something at the thrift store instead.  This area kinda sucks for Thrift though.  I’m really thinking of getting Bradley the Pencil Table Set from Amazon.  Adorable!!!  If I didn’t think it would take a year, I’d ask the hubby to build one…

Okay… so much for the morning blog session.  Child is… being two.

{January 3, 2010}   The Swing of Things

So things are “back to normal” here at the house.  Hubby has returned to school and will be home on the weekends.  He only has two weeks left until his graduation and then he will be home for two weeks before returning to work.  March begins another school for him but this time he will be a few hours away.  He may or may not be home on the weekends.  It’s stressful not to have an extra hand with my son, but it also makes me stronger.

Or more insane.

So, I believe I’m happy that I allowed curiousillusion to bully me into made the decision to redo the 365 project.  Day one made front page of explore. Day two had quite a few views but not many comments. Day three seems to me shaping to be the same as day two.  I really thought I’d get more comments than I have… but then I never expected “Clean Slate” to get any comments at all!  Oh well.

3:365 Through The Storm We Reach The Shore

To vignette or not to vignette, that is the question! I’ve been going back and forth on this edit trying to decide if I like the vignette or not.

Actually, this wasn’t even going to be my shot for today. I had decided to try and take a “cute” picture of me with a York Peppermint Patty. Let’s just say that trying to be cute did NOT work! All the pictures came out terrible and the one potential one you could only see the corner of the wrapper. Then when I finally had another idea… my toddler had consumed my prop!!

Today has been a lazy day inside and I didn’t feel much like wandering around to take other pictures of things. So I wrapped my favorite scarf around my head and *bam* instant picture of the day. I had a few other poses but this one looked the better of them – and I’m usually really critical of pictures of me.

Day three: Complete

{January 1, 2010}   A Clean Slate

I’ve decided that I will never be good at making decisions when it comes to anything in my life.  Most of the time I let other people make them for me or I wait to get enough support from them that I feel obligated to do something.  (I cave to peer pressure too…. shock? I think not.)

Even today I had to get an opinion from someone before I could post a picture to flickr.  I usually ask for opinions so it doesn’t really bother me – most of the time. Today, it did a little.  I think that because of the school dilemma I’ve been feeling worse about myself than usual.  There are a lot of factors that factor in (redundant?) to this guilt.  One, I’d be going to school full time and focusing just on school and perhaps working in the summer months.  I’ve been unemployed for over two years and it has been wearing on me.  Granted, I’ve been raising my son but I don’t like the loss of independence.  I don’t like feeling as if I’m spending all my husband’s money.  I don’t know… I just feel like I’m not holding up some end of a deal.

Anyway – today marks the start of the next 365 project which I hope to actually complete this year.

{December 31, 2009}   Bye Bye Oh Nine

What a year it has been.  Like every year it had it’s ups and downs.  Lows always seem the most memorable so I’m just going to go through some of the good things that happened this past year.

Moved away from South Korea.

Spent a week in Hawaii.

Bought a house in Alabama.

Bradley turned two!

I was able to spend some quality time with my mother who I missed so much when I lived in Korea.

Got a new laptop.

Got an iPhone.

Got a kitten (that can be both good and bad since she likes to pee on dirty laundry…..)

I’m sure that there are more things but those are what jump out at me.  I’ve also obtained the support of my spouse for the change in career I’ve decided on. I’m still hesitant about the decision so I won’t say any more on it now.  I’m not very good on making life changing decisions.  They terrify me.  I don’t get excited when it is time to start new adventures.  I’m much more comfortable with the things I already know.

But when the things you know no longer make you happy, you know it is time for a change.

So – 2009, I bid you adieu.

{December 29, 2009}   Silence Is Golden

I’ve realized that it is more difficult to keep up on my blog and picture taking and other of my hobbies when the hubby is home.  It isn’t that I don’t have time for these things but I feel serious guilt if I’m on the computer and not spending time with him.  A big part of that is him usually living at school and only being home on the weekends.  He’s been home over a week now and I’m starting to get on my computer more in the evenings, usually when he gets on his xbox at night or takes his turn putting the little man to bed.

I’ve been playing catch up on blog reading and I’m really intrigued with curiousillusion’s latest venture with her blog and doing a year in review.  I wish that I had started my blog earlier so I could have read back on things I’ve done and accomplished this past year.  I don’t even have a 365 project to look back on until March.

Maybe I’ll think back and see what was going on… perhaps past tweets will give me an idea or other sites I’ve chatted on.  We’ll see.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Ours was small and quiet and spent in the comfort of our own home.  No running around for us this year.  However, I don’t think we will get so lucky next year.  Already looking at the cost of a train ticket to Vermont.  It would be two days on a train and probably just as long if we drove ourselves.  It’s a toss up.  Would gas be cheaper?  At least we wouldn’t have the stress of driving if we rode the train.  And we’d have an overnight in DC.  That would be lovely to see. DC in the snow.

Now if only I could get my dSLR before then so I can take some spectacular pictures.

{December 18, 2009}   Survey Says?

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate:
Neither?  Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha says Christmas to me.  And yes, it has to be in a red cup.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Santa just delivers presents.  He has underpaid elves for making and wrapping the gifts.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
We’ve always done white.  My mom hated color lights and I think it just rubbed off on me.  White just seems cleaner and it always ties things together.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

5. When do you put your decorations up?
This year it was the day after Thanksgiving.  Last year it was the week before Christmas.  It depends on when the mood hits.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish?
I don’t have one.  Sweet potato?  Stuffing?

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child?
The one thing I remember is walking downstairs in the middle of the night one year and catching my parents sneaking in all of the Santa gifts.   Ha ha.  Oops.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
See above.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Sometimes. I don’t get much under the tree anymore so I would rather wait.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Usually all uniform with similar and matching colors.  This year… it’s a hodgepodge because we went baby safe.

11. Snow. Love it or dread it?
I am in Alabama.  I get rain.

12. Can you ice skate?

13. Do you remember your favorite gift ever?
No, I can’t remember at all.  Maybe the diamond earrings hubby got me seven years ago.  He put them in  a GIANT box and wrapped it….

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?
We usually do a pumpkin and pecan pie

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
They have all faded away over the years but I am trying to revive them.  This year we strung popcorn and cranberries for the tree.

17. What tops your tree?
A Santa… hey, he isn’t breakable.

18. Do you prefer giving or receiving?
I’m a giver.  I love shopping for people.  I just wish I had more money to do more for people.

19. Candy canes: Yuck or yum?
Yum yum yum yum

20. Favorite Christmas show?
Gotta watch Christmas Story every year.

21. Saddest Christmas song?
Christmas Shoes

22. What is your favorite Christmas song?
There are a few.  But I think my favorite isn’t a classic song and there are no lyrics.  I love The Wisdom of Snow by TSO.
